Several marine crossing (marine bridge) are being constructed in these years. For example, Tuen Mun Chek Lap Kok Link Southern Connection Viaduct, part of the road system of Hong Kong Zhuhai Macau Bridge project, and marine portion of Lam Tin Tseung Kwan O. Besides, Cross Bay Link is being planned and under design. These crossings are usually span across the navigation channel, proper design consideration to protect the bridge structure against the ship impact load is therefore required. This seminar will give design engineer a general introduction to the design philosophy of ship impact protection approaches, which is a decision with consideration of risk assessment, structural system and cost effectiveness.
Dr.-Ing Barry Lee, Senior Resident Engineer of AECOM and Adjunct Associate Professor at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, has more than 19 years of worldwide experience in the area of bridge engineering. He is specialized in design and construction engineering of long span bridges, concrete viaduct, composite bridges, high speed railway bridges, design & planning of strait/sea/marine crossing and F.E. modeling of complex structures. He also possesses extensive Project Management experience from different mega scale infrastructure projects around the world. Some representative Marine Crossing Projects are Tuen Mun – Chek Lap Kok link in HK, Izmit Bay Crossing in Turkey, Forth Replacement Crossing in UK, Fehmarnbelt fixed link between Denmark and Germany, Maracaibo Second Crossing in Venezuela, Qatar Bahrain Crossing and Busan-Geoje Fixed Link in Korea.
Besides design experience, he also had hands-on experience in construction of segmental concrete bridge. He has been lecturing at varies Universities in Hong Kong since 2005. Dr Lee is specialized in teaching Bridge Engineering and Design of Prestressed Concrete Structures and currently appointed as Adjunct Associate Professor in Bridge Engineering by Department of Civil Engineering of HKUST.
