Technical Seminar – The common failures of becoming a qualified structural engineer

Date, time & venue
2020-09-23;6:00 pm – 7:00 pm (Talk);Zoom (online)

Speakers:

Ir. Dr. Wing Huen FOK, a veteran trainer, assessor and researcher in the process of developing qualified civil and structural engineers

Synopsis:

Structural engineers are qualified through passing the professional assessment of the HKIE or similar recognized professional bodies in the structural engineering discipline. The professional assessment basically checks that all required competencies of a qualified structural engineer have been acquired by the candidate through training and experience. One disappointing yet recurring phenomenon is that, though the majority of graduate structural engineers under formal graduate training scheme completed their training successfully, their success rate of passing the professional assessment is low. This meeting reviews the common failures of a typical candidate in becoming a qualified structural engineer.

About the Speaker:

Dr Fok practices civil/structural engineering for almost 4 decades. In parallel with his engineering career, he actively involves in education, training and qualification of engineers. He was formerly a training leader of Arup for 12 years, an assessor of professional examination for HKIE, ICE and IStructE for years, and is currently an adjunct professor at the City University of Hong Kong. He is a Fellow of HKIE, ICE, IStructE, CIHT, CIArb and HKIArb.
