Technical seminar on Automatic Wind Load Determination by Nida-wind

Abstract
New wind code “Code of practice on Wind Effects in Hong Kong 2019” has been launched for practical design in Hong Kong. This seminar is about the use and development of software Nida-wind (BD Ref. No. S1085) for efficient, accurate and reliable use of the wind code. The practicality of Nida-wind is ensured by work with the team of Ir CK Lau at SHK Architects and Engineers Ltd. It utilizes high speed and large capacity computing technology to efficiently apply the wind code for reliable design, especially for effective consideration of direct sheltering effect due to surrounding buildings which is very tedious and time consuming by manual or spread sheet calculation with much greater risk of human manipulation errors.

 

About the Speaker:

Professor Dr. YP Liu obtained BSc and MEng from Sun Yat-Sen University and his PhD at HK PolyU. He is currently a guest professor at Southwest Jiaotong University and Shenyang Jianzhu University in Mainland since 2018. He was involved in drafting of steel design codes in Mainland GB50017 (2017) and sits in the ad hoc committee in Hong Kong Steel Code. Dr. Liu publishes more than 100 publications in second-order direct analysis, nonlinear finite element and computational methods and acts as the principal developer of software Nida for practical analysis and design by second-order direct analysis and its theoretical development. In addition to research in steel, composite and seismic and wind engineering and position as Associate editor of the SCI-e Journal “Advanced Steel Construction” and the Journal “Progress in Steel Building Structures”, Dr. Liu acquires extensive practical experience in steel structure design which includes the second-order direct analysis and design of the world longest steel roof in MGM resort in Macau, which is reported in a paper “Design and construction of long-span single-layer dome structures by direct analysis”, HKIE Transactions, 25:1, pp. 29-43, 2018. He was also involved the design of many steel structures such as footbridge and transmission towers in Hong Kong and overseas.
