Synopsis:
In 25 May 2022, over 200 engineers attended an on-line technical presentation on the latest research findings on mechanical properties and structural behaviour of high strength S690 steels conducted at the CNERC. As a sequel, this presentation describes recent design development and codification for high strength S690 steel in Hong Kong as well as in Europe. Attempts are also made to address some practical issues likely to be encountered among design and construction engineers during adoption of these high strength steel in the local construction industry. Potential applications in various types of structural systems will also be illustrated.
About the Speakers:
Ir Prof. K.F. CHUNG 鍾國輝教授工程師 is an internationally renowned academic, researcher and structural engineer with established expertise in steel construction. Currently, Prof. Chung is a Professor at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Founding Director of Chinese National Engineering Research Centre for Steel Construction (Hong Kong Branch) 國家鋼結構工程技術 研究中心香港分中心 at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Prof. Chung works on a wide range of inter-disciplinary engineering investigations, analyses and simulations, especially on modern steel and steel-concrete composite structures. His research interests include materials and behaviour of high strength steels, structural behaviour, limit state analyses and performance-based design of structural systems, structural fire engineering and fire protection in buildings and tunnels, and design codification. Prof. Chung serves as a Member of the Construction Industry Council in Hong Kong since 2018, and he was Vice President of the Institution of Structural Engineers in the U.K. from 2017 to 2020. Prof. Chung is also a Member of the Election Committee 2021 of the Government of Hong Kong SAR under Sub-Sector “Technology and Innovation”.
Ir Dr. H.C. Ho 何浩祥博士工程師 is currently a Research Assistant Professor at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He was appointed as Deputy Executive Secretary of the CNERC in 2020, and also Laboratory-in-charge of CNERC Laboratory for Mechanics and Steel Materials. The research areas of Dr. Ho include materials mechanics of structural steel, structural stability, advanced numerical modelling, structural design and codification of high strength S690 steel, and welding engineering.
