Wind loads may significantly govern the structural design of high-rise buildings in coastal regions and cities such as Hong Kong. Recently, “Code of practice on Wind Effects in Hong Kong 2019” was launched by Buildings Department for practical design in Hong Kong. The structural engineers should calculate the wind loads with consideration of more effects such as across wind, torsional wind, direct sheltering effects, etc. This seminar introduces the theoretical background and the development of software for efficient, accurate and reliable use of the wind code. Advanced method has been developed for effective consideration of direct sheltering effect which is very tedious by manual or spread sheet calculation with much greater risk of human manipulation errors.
About the Speakers:
Dr. YP Liu obtained his PhD from HK PolyU and currently he is a director of NIDA Technology Co., Ltd. He is also a guest professor at Southwest Jiaotong University and Shenyang Jianzhu University in Mainland since 2018. He was involved in drafting of steel design codes in Mainland GB50017 (2017) and sits in the ad hoc committee in Hong Kong Steel Code. Dr. Liu publishes more than 100 publications in second-order direct analysis, nonlinear finite element and computational methods and acts as the principal developer of Nida products. He is an associate editor of the SCI-e Journal “Advanced Steel Construction” and the Journal “Progress in Steel Building Structures”. Dr. Liu acquires extensive practical experience in steel structure design which includes the second-order direct analysis and design of the world longest steel roof in MGM resort in Macau. He is a member of Committee of Steel Structure of China Association for Engineering Construction Standardization(中國工程建設標準化協會鋼結構專業委員會) and Committee of Experts of Guangdong Provincial Society of Steel Construction (廣東省鋼結構協會專家委員會).
